What visit to Yemen would be complete without a visit to their capital city? The capital city of Sana’a is bursting with people, things to do, and wonderful culture. This city is one of the oldest cities in the world that is still circulating with people. And, at a height of 2.300 meters, this city is one of the highest in the air as well. As of the 2004 census statistics, there are 1,747,627 people living in Yemen.

There are many different places to see and do things in Yemen. One place you will likely visit is the Old City. For more than 2,500 years this inner city type atmosphere has served to create some of the most stunning architectural feats in Yemen. Some of the buildings are over 1,400 years old! There are over 100 mosques, 12 bath houses, and 6,500 domestic dwellings. Most of the buildings look like mini-skyscrapers with flat roof type constructions.

Also in the Old City, there is the Salt Market. The Salt Market is like one of the traditional Souks you will find in much of the Middle East. You can buy everything from raisins, spices, cotton, copper, silver, pottery, antiques, and more. The Jami’ al Kabir, also called the Great Mosque was built in the 7th century. This is one of the most majestic mosques and one of the oldest in the Muslim world. Three parks and a presidents palace are also part of Sana’a.

The weather in Sana’a is classified to be a mild desert type of climate. And, there is even a mountain range you can visit right near Sana’a. The Jabal an-Nabi Shu’ayb is the highest mountain in the Arabian Peninsula and one of the most famous in all the world.

Most of the local men carry a jambiya, which is a dagger. It isn’t used as a weapon so much as a bargaining chip. The designs of the handles in ivory, precious stones, and more keep things civil. There are restaurants, hotels, places to hang out, and more.

Just like any other city, there are many places to experience. If you decide to visit here, don’t try and take everything in at once as you’ll be overwhelmed. You should instead try to span your trip to Sana’a over a couple days. This will give you time to really enjoy what the city has to offer and ensure that you aren’t just in and out of every place you really enjoy visiting.

The number of people selling items from small stores and out walking is immense. At any time during your average day, you can find hundreds of people out walking and taking in what the city has to offer. Don’t forget to bring enough money to hire a tour guide when you get to Sana’a, as the best places to eat, drink, and enjoy life in the city are well known to the people who are paid to show you around.
